THE ORGANISATION – ONWARDS & UPWARDS & XO BIKES
We are a charity created to directly tackle the cycle of reoffending driven by the barriers to unemployment faced; our purpose is clear and our plan is simple. We will break the cycle of reoffending by starting sustainable social enterprises which train and employ ex-offenders. These must be organisations that people are proud to work for, provide personal and professional development, that operate in high demand sectors, and that showcase the talents and potential of ex-offenders as employees to businesses and society at large.
Our plan in the long-term is to launch, test, and grow a range of social enterprises that all follow this model – of training, supporting and employing ex-offenders in positive environments that are part of a community, with aspirational brands, and with full support for people to grow and move on with their lives.
Our first venture is XO Bikes – where we train people to become qualified bike mechanics and then aim to find them meaningful jobs in the cycling sector. XO Bikes has had a fantastic two years, with 64 people having completed training, in-prison workshops and two shops selling the bikes our fixers have refurbished.
XO Bikes relies on a steady stream of bikes to allow us to train, fix, and sell bikes. We currently have a busy website, our retail sites, a strong profile in the sector, and our own range of swagged bikes. None of that would be possible without the donation of bikes, from both our larger donators such as the police, and our vital single donations from the public. We, one day, hope to be the destination for recycled bikes, this role will be pivotal in building our reputation as the best bunch of mechanics in the business!
THE ROLE – XO FIXER
Wandsworth is home to our flagship store – it is where we do the bulk of our servicing work and where we deal with some high-end bikes, and high-end customers. Wandsworth has an exciting and busy summer ahead, after building up an excellent reputation through its current staff and level of service.
We need an organised, pragmatic, and motivated problem solver who is going to relish the opportunity of having a constant stream of servicing work coming through, with a whole range of issues to triage, understand and fix. The work at Wandsworth ranges from flat tyres, to flat batteries, to full platinum service work.
We are looking for someone who will take ownership of the work and be happy to work both independently, and as part of a close and busy team. Training opportunities will be available, and there will be a lot of learning on the job.
The position is being offered on a six – month basis as we expect to be hugely busy over the summer. This will be open to extension if there is sufficient work, or we will actively support you in finding further work in the industry. The contract is being offered on a 0 hours basis, but with the expectation that you will work either 15, or 22.5 hours every week, depending on your preference at interview stage.
This role will principally focus on the servicing and flipping of bikes, working closely with our Wandsworth team and Operations Assistant
Primary responsibilities will include the following:
- Working a consistent shift pattern of Either Friday/Saturday/Sunday OR Friday/Saturday/Monday throughout the summer period.
- Servicing work for both booked in and walk – in issues
- Prioritising work in response to customer requirements
- Communication with General Manager or Head Mechanic in regards to parts needed and work still to complete
- Accurate recording of work on Monday, including pricing of parts
- Knowledge and use of Citrus Lime (training will be delivered on site)
- Although this is not currently forecasted, there may also be a requirement to work occasional shifts at our Lewisham site.
The role will also require pitching in, taking on responsibilities and opportunities for organisation wide projects, and taking initiative to complete what needs doing.
THE PERSON
Our hope is to find an energetic, organised, and positive team player, similarly comfortable working independently. It is a very varied role and one that needs calm focus as well as spontaneity and initiative. A desire to build mechanic skills will be key, as you will be completing a lot of mechanic work!
As a rough guide the sorts of skills/qualities we are looking for are:
- A strong set of mechanic skills and willingness to build on this
- Able to accurately quote work to customers and provide them with updates on progress
- Excellent organisational skills – many moving parts, many iterations
- Willingness to learn on IT systems – Monday and Citrus Lime will be used consistently
- Strong communication and teamwork – writing well and a good balance of speaking and listening
- Ability to manage workload – prioritising and balancing focus
- Reliable – Ability to work detailed hours (exclusive of emergencies)
